Concerning Matter

June 13 - 22, 2014
Gowanus Ballroom

Brooklyn, NY 11215

Opening Reception: June 13th, 7:00pm - 11:00pm

In Concerning Matter, materialism is the primary approach for artists who refuse to operate solely in a conceptual sphere. Matter-based signifiers emerge through the works on view to tease and provoke consciousness. Keenly honed sensorial experiences become the proving ground for social, physical, and intellectual forays. Through the manipulation of organic and inorganic forms, issues of mortality, mourning, memory, bodily preoccupation and spatial interaction are investigated.

Situated within this context, matter itself becomes vital. Crucial, not because of the ways it can be commodified, but because the materials at hand, flour and resin, shattered glass and mud, LED panels and aluminum, become vehicles for profound exploration. Not disheartened by the pervasiveness of the physical, the artists in Concerning Matter are invigorated by what we have in front of us—what we can hold in our hands and explore with our senses. New forms emerge out of matter--matter conceived as enfolding creative potential. Art yet unmade.

Artists include:
Anita Giraldo, Alyssa Dennis, Megan Hays, Elaine Su-Hui, Sam Spiczka, Magdalena Dukiewicz, Magdalena Firlag, Philip Goetz, Taxiplasm, Ryan Burns, Allison Maletz, J McDonald, Jonah Emerson-Bell and Traci Horgen.

The Whitney Houston Biennial

For Immediate Release

Christine Finley Curates Every Woman
The Whitney Houston Biennial Serenades New York City Art Scene, 75 Female Voices Create Their Greatest Love of All
THE WHITNEY HOUSTON BIENNIAL: I’M EVERY WOMAN

Brooklyn, New York - The 2014 Whitney Houston Biennial: I’m Every Woman comes as a response to the awakening representation of women artists in major museums and galleries. To highlight female artists in New York this season, curator and artist Christine Finley will host seventy-five female artists from a varied range of geographic and cultural backgrounds, disciplines, methodologies, and generations. The artists studio will be transformed into an inviting, living space, a salon filled with work from artists including Guerilla Girls, Swoon, Sienna Shields, NARCISSISTER and Annie Sprinkle & Beth Stephens. The aim of bringing together so many creative voices is to sing a collective song that celebrates the contributions of pioneer female artists and marks a moment in our communal trajectory.

“The Whitney Houston Biennial is a feast for the eyes and a celebration of female voices.” Artist and curator C. Finley

The show’s title not only playfully addresses the traditional (and concurrent) exhibit held at the Whitney Museum, but also honors a strong and brilliant lady, two years since her untimely passing, who once sang these words from Chaka Khan:

“Whatever you want;
Whatever you need;
Anything you want done;
I do it naturally!
Because I’m every woman,
It’s all in me!”

About the Biennial:
The Biennial will take place on March 9th 4-8:00pm at 20 Jay Street, Suite 207 Dumbo, Brooklyn (NYFA and Marie Walsh Sharpe studios are in the same building). The show will be one night only.
